So What Is Satori?

"Satori - in the awakening from a dream. Awakening and self-realization and seeing into one's own being - these are synonymous."

Bruce Lee, Striking Thoughts: Bruce Lee's Wisdom for Daily Living

Satori...in Zen Buddhism of Japan, the inner, intuitive experience of Enlightenment; Satori is said to be unexplainable, indescribable, and unintelligible by reason and logic. It is comparable to the experience undergone by Gautama Buddha when he sat under the Bodhi tree and, as such, is the central Zen goal. Satori is analogous to the conversion experience or spiritual rebirth of other religious traditions in that it constitutes a complete reordering of the individual in relation to the universe. Satori usually is achieved only after a period of concentrated preparation and may occur spontaneously as a result of a chance incident, such as a sudden noise.

Encyclopedia Brittanica, 2020

"To achieve satori, enlightenment, means to draw nearer to God, to take away the gap, to tear down the fence between us and the natural world. Our personal struggle for refinement will lead to the realization that our lives and the workings of the universe are one. This is the active and living satori..."

Your experience with Satori may very well be a newfound sense of enlightenment. I have found that many of our struggles stem from not understanding ourselves and how we struggle to belong in the world. Come speak with us and identify where you would like some help discovering yourself or just a place to be heard. Building your connection to the greater sense of the universe can be started with just a simple step - connecting! Whether it be anxiety, pain, depression, trauma, or many of the challenges in our world, Satori Psychotherapy strives to assist you in your own satori. You are so much more than your struggle.

My experience with Satori started with martial arts training, continuing through consideration of zen and lives strong to this day in the guise of work with my clients, searching for meaning and understanding behind the struggle of everyday life. Continuing into my own journey as a father and man, life offers these revelations sporadically to provide insight into my own understanding and conceptualization of myself. I pray that our own work together can be fruitful as well. Be well!

Much of the work we do at Satori Psychotherapy involves standard therapeutic practice and we also encourage clients to consider if clinical hypnosis included in their treatment is right for them! Click below to find out more.
